A Unique Experience

Are you looking for portraits of your family that you will treasure the rest of your life?  When you hire Jen Semmler Photography, you can feel confident that the process will be as easy for you as possible. My goal as your photographer is to listen to your needs, create a plan that meets them, give you the most stress-free portrait experience possible, and then create beautiful portrait art your family will enjoy every day.

Most parents find that when their children are having a great experience, they too are able to relax and love their portraits. Your child(ren) are my main focus when planning and executing your session. To accomplish this goal, I use my background in child psychology & development and elementary school teaching.

I also believe in the innate value and importance of having printed images of those you love in your home. It not only brings you joy, but seeing their own portrait on the wall brings a greater sense of self-esteem into the lives of children. In an age of so much technology, it is wonderful for children to be able to see themselves and their family's pictures anytime without a battery needed.

The Portrait Process

The Planning Consultation

The first step in creating beautiful portraits is finding the right photographer for you. Meeting with me in a complimentary planning consultation gives you the opportunity to see if I'm the right person for you. During your planning consultation, we will meet together at my Fairport, NY studio to chat, talk about what kinds of images you hope to get from your session, look at portrait art samples, and discuss pricing, wardrobe, and location options. If you decide that you want to book a session, we will go through and sign my portrait contract with you to answer any questions you have along the way. I will also collect your Session Retainer to reserve your session date.

Wardrobe Fitting Appointment

One of the most unique features of my studio is my Client Closet! I have gowns for girls sizes 2t through 14, gowns for women in sizes x-small through x-large, and formal clothing for boys in sizes from 6 months through 7. I have spent years collecting my gowns from designers all over America, as well as Europe and Australia. These include couture designers for girl gowns such as Anna Triant Couture, Bentley & Lace, and Little Dreamers Tutus, as well as designers such as Silk Fairies, Leah Maria Clothing, and Before & Ever Couture for women's gowns. Instead of spending hundreds if not thousands of dollars on buying dresses you may only use once, I provide them for you.

A wardrobe fitting is so important for multiple reasons. Of course, it is important to know what fits and looks good to not waste time and energy the day of your session, but the bigger reason behind it is to give your child(ren) the opportunity to get comfortable and excited about their upcoming portrait session. Coming to the studio to see all the dresses and accessories is like stepping into a Fairy Godmother's playroom. Trying on big, poofy  gowns and twirling in front of a full-length mirror makes most girls feel like royalty. And through all the fun there is no pressure since we are not taking portraits that day! This appointments lets your child(ren) meet me face to face so the day of their session I'm not some unknown stranger. They get the chance to become much more comfortable with me before ever being in front of my camera.

The Portrait Session

The big day! I come to your session with a plan. After talking with you in your consultation and getting to know your family better, we have picked a time and place that will work best for you and your family's needs. I have my shots planned based on the kind of printed art you think you would like to order so that I can best fulfill your needs. Now it is time to relax and love your family. I will give you plenty of guidance on posing including just what to do with your hands(!) to make you all look your best. I also use developmentally appropriate cues to guide even your toddler through posing for wonderful images you will love!

The Reveal & Ordering Appointment

Your Reveal & Ordering Appointment is when you and I sit down together to view your portraits in my studio displayed on my 49" TV. Using special software, I will guide you through the selection process as we cull down to the portraits you love best. Once you know which portraits you want, we will discuss what kind of art, such as an album or framed canvas, would work best for your images. Once your final selections are made, I will go through each image with you to take notes on the final edits needed to make your portraits everything you want them to be. This includes such retouching as removing acne, bruises, & stray hair wisps, removing lint from clothing or unwanted things from outdoor backgrounds, as well as creating composite images swapping heads from multiple images to make sure everyone looks their best in the whole family portrait. You are the expert of your family, so I depend on your guidance to let me know what goes (acne, bruises, etc) and what stays (birthmarks, scars, etc).

The Delivery

Once your order has been placed and payment completed, I will make all final retouches to your ordered portraits. Before sending any of your images to be printed, I will send you a proof gallery to check that everything looks as you want it to be. After you give final approval, your portrait files are sent to one of my professional printing labs. Your art will be delivered to me first for any final touches as well as quality assurance checks. Once everything is set, I will package your art and reach out to you to arrange a time you are home for delivery or you can meet me at my Fairport, NY studio for pick-up. This way, you have a chance to check and make sure everything is just right with your art.
